Kayaking and Birdwatching on Lake Nicaragua

Guided Kayak Tours of the Granada Isletas

Our ecolodge is located on an island, so for us kayaks really are a part of every day life. And our guests can share in that privilege by paddling out and exploring the wonderful ecosystem that surrounds the Jicaro Island Ecolodge. With our expert guides you'll learn about the natural history of the islands, their significance and the various scientific and indigenous formation theories that revolve around them. If you are lucky, you may be rewarded with a sighting of a generally shy species of lake turtle that makes occasional appearances on the Island shores.

Birdwatching

Setting off at dawn or dusk we initially explore the neighbouring islands before bearing South toward the tip of the peninsula. Lake Cocibalca is famed for its spectacular bird life, and you are likely to spot all manner of interesting birds including species such as the Montezuma’s Oropendula, the Ringed Kingfisher, the Purple Gallinule and the Northern Jacana amongst others. Our highly experienced local guides will help you to identify the various birds you spot as the tour unfolds. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars; if you don’t have your own, ask for a pair at the reception.
