El Papagayo
The boat was named after the wind, and its the wind that makes San Jan del Sur such a perfect location to head out sailing from. Captained by the extremely relaxed Ira, on heading out from the bay in San Juan del Sur you are faced with a simple choice - North or South? Whichever way you chose to go, you'll be greeted by breathtaking views. Cattle roaming mile long deserted beaches, gentle rolling hills turning to rugged mountains, and then effortlessly into thick jungle, and back to soft white sand again. The sound of howler monkey's doing their thing in the distant canopy, and the sights of the admiral birds soaring high up above you, and the pelicans skimming the waves all around you.
Heading North
If you opt to go North, you'll be able to enjoy a privileged view of Nicaragua's most popular tourist beaches. On leaving the harbour you'll see Majagual, Marsella and then Playa Maderas. If the wind conditions are right, and you set off early enough you could expect to get as far as Tola in a day. The views would include Manzanillo, Arenas Bay, Gigante, Playa Amarillo, Hacienda Iguana, Playa Colorado and then Rancho Santana and it's five beaches. You'd then have to battle home... Heading North I would suggest taking it easy and overnighting in the bay at Gigante.
Heading South
Going South out of the harbour you'll pass Remanso, Playa el Coco, El Brasilito, El Ostional and eventually you'll arrive at Bahia Salinas, which is where the Nicaragua ends and Costa Rica begins. If you are lucky you may see blue whales, which are known to stop by Bahia Salinas for a bit of R&R on their long migratory journeys.
